More than 111,000 Harley-Davidson touring bikes recalled

Powersports Business
Friday December 11, 2009

Nearly 111,600 2010 Harley-Davidson touring models are expected to be recalled around Dec. 14, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The bikes are being recalled because the front fuel tank mounts may distort if the bike's frame is damaged in a frontal collision, causing the fuel tank to leak at a weld on a bracket. The leak could result in a fire that could injure the rider, reported the NHTSA.

The bikes were manufactured June 6, 2008-Nov. 19. Affected are the 2009-2010 models of the FLHP, FLHPE, FLHR, FLHTP, FLHR SHRINE, FLHRC, FLHT, FLHTC, FLHTCU, FLHTCU SHRINE, FLHTCU W/SC, and the 2009 models of the FLTR, FLTR3-CVO, FLTRSE3, FLHTCU4-CVO, FLHTCUSE4, FLHTCUSE5, FLHTCUTG, FLHTK. Also recalled are the 2009-2011 FLHX and the 2010 model of the FLHXXX, as well as several other models with the letters F & L in their names.

In related news, Harley engineers are now designing gas tanks made from billet titanium, with ceramic heat shields.

Let me get this straight...

IF the bike wrecks "right", the gas tank could leak? Is it just me or couldn't this be said about any bike that takes on a "frontal collision"?

Exactly.

If you get in a severe frontal crash, that bends the frame, it can tweak the gas tank, which could cause a leak, which could explode.

As if, that would be any concern of mine in such a crash.

WTF! Stupid!

The brainyact that thought this shit up should be shot.

I'd be willing to guess some jackass ambulance chasing lawyer got the person who got into the wreck talked into that problem. Any person with any decent common bike sense would just blow that off.

U Huh... Sounds like the retarded frame recall on Suzukis... If you crashed it or were stunting it, the frame could crack. No really?

No this isn't about the frame. Its about the gas tank. They are going to re-enforce the gas tank mounts to they are less easily bent.

All I know is if I can see it (not likely), it will come off when the bike gets home.

No, I was referring to it being the same type of thing.
