I'm thinking it's simpler than that: White riders drive Harleys. And black riders choose faster, smaller, more dangerous European-built sport cycles.
He lost me there. Aside from the obvious mistake, the original article stated that even after controlling for the severity of the accident there was still a disparity in death rates. The type of bike doesnt matter, a 50 mph lowside is a 50 mph lowside.

Maybe this is a regional/urban thing, but I see plenty of black riders on Harleys and custom cruisers.

Personally, I think they're just overlooking the more obvious answer.

Death is a racist.

from the article

Driving home from work, picking up the kids or heading to a Phillies game, I'm likely to encounter a white guy coasting by on a Harley or a black guy careening past on a Hayabusa. Or a Ducati. Or some other foreign death craft whose name I can't pronounce.

I've never seen a white guy on a cruiser weave between two cars on a highway. Or been passed on the shoulder by what looks like a pill on wheels, only to notice that familiar Harley orange and black logo.

No, when somebody suddenly rips past my bumper without so much as a turn signal or a courtesy wave, it's usually a black rider and always a sporty bike.

There's no racial animus here. Nothing discriminatory. It's just the fact of what I see out on some of the most hectic roads in the region.

I know he's lumping everybody into one group but it's usually the sportbikes with the more aggressive riders.

Even America's roads are racist.

Black man + impact with asphalt = more black on black crime.

Johns Hopkins researchers analyzed 68,840 motorcycle accidents recorded by the National Trauma Data Bank between 2002 and 2006. The data show that black riders were 50% more likely to die than white riders, despite the fact that African Americans were more likely to be wearing helmets at the time of the crash. The disparity held up even after controlling for the severity of the accident, the biker's gender and insurance status. White bikers not wearing helmets were still less likely to die in a crash than black bikers wearing helmets; the highest risk group were blacks riding without protective head gear.
This should eliminate any differences due to more of one group participating in riskier behavior than another group. They arent comparing 150 MPH 'Busa accidents with 20 MPH parade crashes.
