Default laptop problem

my main laptop has developed a problem. About 2 or 3 minutes after turning it on, the screen goes black. The only way to get the screen back on is to reboot the computer, but then it blacks out again. The computer is still running, but the screen is black, making it impossible to use. Any ideas?

Can you hook up a monitor and see if it's still putting out a vid signal?

Can you hold a flashlight up to it to see if it's just the backlight going off?

This is what's happening. What's the fix?

I have a small LCD tv that I can use as a monitor, but need to find a cable to hook it up.

Could be lots of stuff, but if you can see windows and move stuff around on the screen, and it's just dark, then you can stop troubleshooting things like the video signal.

Last time I had a backlight go out, it was a short in the wiring in the hinge.

Thanks. I'd be willing to bet it's a short in the wiring since it fits your above description. I've seemed to notice it happens sometimes when moving the screen, although sometimes it will just happen on it's own.

I'm guessing there isn't much of a fix, other than to replace wiring

Hey cutie, I will call my x hub tomorrow ( he is a computer geek ) that is what he does for a living and see if he has any suggestions. If so I will let you know. Angela

I hooked up my TV as a monitor, but haven't had the problem except for one time today. It's very random and certainly not my power settings. Sometimes the screen will stay on for 2 or 3 minutes, sometimes for 2 or 3 hours. I'll see how it acts with an additional monitor hooked up.
