Default No arms, No Thumbprint, No $

TAMPA, Florida — A Florida man born without arms says a Tampa bank would not let him cash a check because he couldn't provide a thumbprint.

Steve Valdez didn't have an account at a Bank of America location in downtown Tampa, where he tried to cash a check from his wife last week. However, Valdez has prosthetic arms and is unable to provide a thumbprint. He says he presented two forms of identification but was still denied.

He tells the St. Petersburg Times a bank manager told him he could either come back to the bank with his wife or open an account himself.

Bank of America spokeswoman Nicole Nastacie says the bank has apologized to Valdez. Nastacie says the bank should have "offered alternative requirements if an individual is not able to give a thumbprint."

Since when do banks have access to fingerprint records for people?

Can't be an illegal... Can't climb a fence or swim 100 miles if you were born without both arms.

I have a friend who refuses to open a bank account because she says she doesnt want to pay the, inevitable for her, overdraft fees. So she walks around with a wad of cash which I tell her is stupid but she wont listen.

I don't think they do. If someone without an account cashes a check that bounces, is bad, or is forged and the bank cannot contact them to get the money back they have video of what the person looks like and a thumbprint to give to the police. ID can be faked, video and a thumbprint are more difficult.

Or just lied inside a hidden compartment in a truck. Or walked thru an underground tunnel. Or came via boat.
