I see you list home as Canada. Since I vacation in your beautiful country three weeks a year, we'll just end hostilities right now

False.

Misconception #1: It takes more energy to start a fluorescent that it does to run it, so leave the lights on all the time to save money on your electric bill.

Reality: When you turn on a fluorescent light bulb (correctly called a "lamp"), there is a very brief jump in current when the ballast charges the cathodes and causes the lamp to start. This inrush of current can be many times greater than the normal operating current of the lamp. However, the spike of current draw normally lasts no longer than 1/10th of a second, and draws the equivalent of about 5 seconds of normal operation. So, if you turn your fluorescent lamp off and on more frequently than every 5 seconds, you will use more power than normal. So, normal switching of fluorescent lamps has very, very, very little effect on a power bill.

Another pro for Mythbusters. They did actual measurements of the amount of power used to start up various lights. Their measurements showed that turning on a fluorescent light took less power than is used in the time it takes to go to your fridge and back.

My father, the engineer, and knower off all things ridiculous, would never had taught us kids to turn the lights off to save energy when we were little if it costs more to switch them on/off.

To this day it bugs me to go into someone's home bathroom, or house room for that matter and to have the light on "just" cause.

In our house, most lights are turned off unless otherwise needed. All bulbs are efficient as well.

The old-school neon bulbs, or the new energy-saving ones?

was that with the incandescent bulbs? we were always told to shut lights off too. we have those CFL's and a 4' one downstairs, we shut them off just like they were any other light we use.

I find it wrong that Mythbusters would harm our enviroment by using excess power for profit. Time for some legislation.

And I find it objectionable that some people put mayonnaise on fries, but some things are just beyond our control.
