Default What does it all mean?

Was thinking yesterday, what do all the letters mean? As in VFR, ZX, GSXR, YZF, DRZ, etc....

Hubby said the VFR = V Four Racing but didn't know the others.

Does anyone else know?

Everybody has their own opinion on what they mean but theres no official answer. They say CB is "City Bike" and CBR is "City Bike Racing" but who knows.

Its just internal codes from honda, some letters denote engine type, some mean fairings, and the. Order denotes fork alignment in certain cases.

Cb = inline engine
Cbr = inline engine with fairings
Vf = v engine with more than 2 cyls
Vfr = same as above with fairings
Rvf = same as above inverted forks
Vt = vtwin
Etc

Hmm, I believe there was a Cycle World article devoted to this a while back. Peter Egan, maybe?

Damned if I can't find it.

GS = Grand Sport
GSXR = Grand Sport eXperimental Racing
YZF= Yamaha (Z)racing Four-stroke

I've also been told that the use of the letter Z is just marketing hype because people unconsciously think Z=last &best version

I know in Kawi terms that it's the next progression of the bike. First few years were A1 when they started in the 60's and just went from there.

But Z does seem to be popular through all the Japanese bike lineups.
