Not a lot, but some. A fair bit of our oil goes south of the border, for refining.

Well that's heavily subsidized.

We have a refinery right here in Torrance and we're still paying just under $5 a gallon right now.

Are you happy about the production you guys are doing up there?

After seeing a photo presentation on TED, I suddenly don't mind buying my oil from the Mid-East.

I'm guessing that you're talking about the Tar Sands. They're finally cleaning it up and improving production. What I'm not happy with is how the oil that's produced is virtually being given away, to American interests, because Alberta is addicted to oil tax money. The money that they aren't taking in should be used for clean-up.

Yeah, I was referring to the Tar Sands.

I'm not sure what you are referring to cleaning up. I was more concerned with the total devastation of some irreplaceable land.

Suncor has been taking a beating, over the tar sands, and are being forced to clean up their act. Current extraction methods are significantly cleaner (though still dirty) and use significantly less water (due to filtering and recirculation), and they're having to go back to clean up their previous messes.

Unfortunately what they don't clean up, and you can be sure there will be a lot of that, will be left to public interests. Since the money is being spent by the Alberta government like a horny submariner on shore leave, there won't be any money left for that. It will likely come out of MY pocket, while the money that Alberta is taking in stays in Alberta.

I was planning on riding to work more this Spring and Summer anyway; guess I'll be spending less on gas while doing so.
