This stuff is not new by a long shot. If you think your phone is secure, you're out of your damn mind.

In all honesty, the closest to an "untappable" phone the average person is going to get is a VOIP line.

How is anything surprised by this? The only way to make anything secure is to wrap a wet towel around your head and then...

At my last job for a large auto finance company we would "bust" people's cell phones to obtain a copy of their phone records. We could then take the phone numbers we found and bust them to find out who owned them.

So say you owe your bank money and they can't find you or get you on the phone. They bust your cell phone and start calling the people that you talk to on the most frequent basis. They'll send a truck out to the address on your phone and the addresses on your friend's and family's phone. We never had the ability to "tap" the phone and listen to conversations, but we could gain access to personal voicemail, which usually generated a lot of information.

Eventually I got to the point where I wouldn't do it anymore. I believe that decision factored into my termination.

Pre-paid phones were the only ones we couldn't bust.

Not unless he had a warrant. So, I'll say no.
