Agreed. I don't see tiered licensing ever being passed in the US (I'm sure someone would say it was in violation of their civil rights or something ), so mandatory education is the next logical step.

yeah that's where that whole personal responsibility thing comes in to play. yeah that sucks when you have to be responsible for your own damn actions. it absolutely sucks when you don't have a gov't agency telling you "hey don't do that moron it might kill you". maybe a few less morons in the world would be a good thing.

Hey, I'm all in support of Darwinism, BUT... If you haven't been around bikes, haven't had the fortune to have more experienced people to help lead you in the right direction (i.e. "No, jackass, a new 1000cc supersport is NOT a good beginner bike...."), then it's not that they're being irresponsible - they just don't know better.

So if a little mandatory education at least gives them some tools to start off on the right foot, why not?

When I first got an interest in getting a bike, I was ALLLLLLL about a (then) NEW ZX6R - I thought it was "just" a 600. Luckily, I had the good fortune to fall into a good crowd who made me realize that "little" 600 was a damned powerful machine. They also (*cough cough* primarily Chris) taught me about gear, about taking the BRC, and about not being generally squidly. But not everyone has people like that around them to help show them the way.... so all too often, people DO start off squidly, start off on a too-powerful bike, and have to learn the hard way. So at least with a mandatory BRC, like Racer X said, they stand a slightly better chance of knowing how to CONTROL that new bike. SOME skills are better than none.

Your right any bike can bite you, but what Racer X is saying is a bigger, more powerful bike will take a bigger chuck out of you.

A crash at a steady 35 mph on a 250cc is the same as a 1000cc for the most part other then the extra weight of the bike.

Reving the bike and popping the clutch is very different on those two bikes.

They don't make that many bikes. I think they could list what bike is in what tier to make it easy.

First tier could be up to 250cc.

Second could list bikes l list the 500cc sport bikes like the Ninja 500 and so on. Maybe 500-650 cc cruisers like the V Star 650 (I rode one in Daytona, it was a nice riding bike). Maybe even add the SV650 but I'm not even sure on that one.

This would make it clear on what you can start with and what you can move up to next. If a company wants to get the new riders on with their brand they will build more 1 and 2 tier bikes. If not they have to try to get them to switch over when they get to that level.

I think it could work and wouldn't hurt. I'm just happy that I have my licenses.

I agree but what about the moron that darts in front of you on 1000 cc, eyes as big as dinner plate just hanging on for the ride?

I'm not of fan of government and a bunch of rules but I don't see this as a bad thing. I wouldn't complain if my kids had to start on a bike in the 250cc range at 16. I wouldn't want them on the highway but I wouldn't have a problem with them starting at that point.
