I can do it, just need to find the time. If you are looking for something quick, there is probably a schematic on the net for something close.

Of the social engineering solutions suggested so far, this may be the most effective.

Trip, am I even on the right track with the 555 Timer IC? It strikes me that if so, this may only require the chip, a cap, and a resistor...

555 is old school, you can probably do it for cheaper and have more options with a programmable chip.

Honestly, you could probably do it with just a diode and a resistor. My brain is fried right at the moment, but I may be able to come up with something for you by the morning.

I suppose I can stand one more morning of this without going postal.

Thanks!

OK, I got to thinking about it, and I had a burst of inspiration. I'm still not thinking all that clearly, but it sounds to me like what you need is a simple time-delay relay. They usually have about a 5-second delay and should accomplish exactly what you want for just a few bucks. I'm thinking you want to go with one that acts as a normally-closed relay wired in series with your circuit. This page should get you started:

http://www.allaboutcircuits.com/vol_4/chpt_5/3.html

Make sure you measure your voltage output and current draw at the point in the circuit where you are going to add the relay. IIRC, most doorbells run 16V, but yours may be 24V depending on your transformer and chime setup.

This all makes perfect sense in my brain, but I'm not sure how well that translates into text, so hopefully you get the gist. If it's gibberish, let me know and I'll try to clean it up.

Awesome. Zactly what I need. 5 Seconds should eliminate spurious button presses from all but the most determined Micheal J. Fox impersonators.

Don't you mean "without going carrier"?

No, the postal bitch apparently has fucking Parkinson's too.

Can't seem to get anyone's mail right either. I'm always having to negotiate "hostage exchanges" with my neighbors.

The other day she left a priority mail box with $260 worth of software perched atop my mailbox.

That whole idea about the airhorn is starting to really sound attractive. I need to also rig it to a camera, to take reaction shots, though.
