N. Korea agrees to halt nuke activities for food
Clinton says announcement is 'modest first step in right direction'

WASHINGTON (CNN) - North Korea has agreed to halt nuclear tests, long-range missile launches and enrichment activities at its Yongbyon nuclear complex in exchange for food aid from the United States, the State Department said Wednesday.

The state-run North Korean news agency (KCNA) announced the agreement separately.

"Today's announcement represents a modest first step in the right direction. We, of course, will be watching closely and judging North Korea's new leaders by their actions," Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Wednesday before the House Appropriations Committee.

In return for the moratorium on nuclear activities at this key site, the United States has agreed to finalize a package of 240,000 metric tons of nutritional assistance to North Korea

Now every dippy little nation knows what they can get from us. It's time for some other "superpower" to step up and get shafted.

I'll believe it when I see it. My guess is that they get the food and then test another bomb

Last time they did this the people didn't see a gram of food. It all went to the military.

Once again, we're equipping an enemy army. WTG!

Probably. I suspect at least some of the motivation for the agreement is to see if Kim Jong-un is any more trustworthy than his father was. If he sticks to the deal we may have someone we can work with. If he reneges then he is probably new boss, same as the old boss and all it costs us is some food. We have given away a hell of a lot more for a hell of a lot less in the past (see Pakistan for one).

The military is the people, this is a totalitarian military state. Nearly everyone is military.

I think it's a good thing. Think of the possibilities and you realize what a great investment it is. If it doesn't work out, then it's just a drop in the bucket of the United States budget. I think it's an attempt to start some negotiations and maybe talk some damn sense into them.
