The cat wouldn't go into a depression like a dog might if you kicked the bucket, is all I was sayin'.
They're just different, much more independent creatures - and not 'hardwired' as a companion like most dogs tend to be. They can be anti-social assholes , or they can be extremely personable & attached to people (or a single person, like Kathy's big tabby who is a total mama's boy) - it's just that it's a matter of choice with them.
As for letting them roam - some couldn't care less, and some can't stand to be cooped-up. Tough call, depending on where the owner lives & how badly the cat wants out - but if one decides to let them out, one has to accept that they might not come back someday.
