The cavalry is coming.

From Calgary, naturally. But not on a steed.

After two consecutive days of problems with the Richmond Oval 2010 Olympia re-surfacing machines, including an embarrassing hour-and-a-half interruption of Tuesday’s men’s 500-metre final, a Zamboni is being transported from the Calgary Olympic Oval to ensure that no further glitches occur.

It’s expected to arrival via flatbed truck sometime today, but not before the women’s 500 metres was scheduled to run at 1 p.m. PST.

"It’s been a couple of tough days,’’ chief ice maker Mark Messer acknowledged following the Monday meltdowns. "We’ve been working through it. We apologize for the delays.

Electrical malfunctions and issues with the rag that distributes the water from behind the re-surfacer played havoc with the first two days of long-track speed skating. With two misfiring machines Monday, forcing a delay so prolonged that it prompted speculation the men’s 500 might be postponed for another day, the decision was made to bring in the Zamboni that has helped maintain the "fastest ice in the world" due east.

"Different machines, different problems,’’ sighed Messer. "One was the drive, the other was the conveyor system. It’s electronics.’’

Messer pointed out that the condition of the ice isn’t the problem.

"I think it’s pretty good. In the men’s 5000, an Olympic record was broken (by Sven Kramer of the Netherlands). It can’t be that bad.’’
