Police: Gunman inside Discovery building
September 1, 2010 - 2:22pm
SILVER SPRING, Md. - A gunman has entered the Discovery Communications building in Silver Spring and has taken at least one person hostage, Montgomery County Police say.

Police say the man walked into the lobby around 1 p.m. Wednesday. He is reportedly carrying explosives.

Montgomery County Police Cpl. Dan Friz tells Channel 7 that a gunman is in the building.

The building has been evacuated.

Multiple witnesses have reported shots being fired, WTOP's Brennan Haselton reports.

Faisal Afzal, a systems engineer at Discovery, tells WTOP he was heading back into the building after lunch at about 1 p.m. and was about 20 feet from the door when he heard a street vendor yelling.

"We heard a street vendor yelling, there's a guy with a gun, there's a guy with a gun. He's in the building. And I saw people lying down on the floor at the building. And we just ran away from the building and we heard a couple shots fired," Afzal tells WTOP.

"I saw at least four people lying sideways on the floor."

A person inside the building told The Associated Press says the man had something strapped to his chest and has hostages. The person refused to be identified, saying people inside have been told not to speak to the media.

SWAT teams are on their way to the building, which is located on Georgia Avenue in downtown Silver Spring, a police spokesperson tells WTOP.

WTOP's Kate Ryan, who is on the scene, says there is an amazing police presence in the area.

The situation is not affecting Metro service. However, the Metro entrance on Wayne Avenue is closed, WTOP's Adam Tuss, who is on the scene, reports.
