Default Bicycle restoration.

Anyone here into road bicycling?

I inherited an old (1980's?) road bike and I'd like to start using it this spring. I'd like to replace wheel and steering head bearings, brake pads, tires, and perhaps the cables and chain if necessary. I can't remember the make off the top of my head, but it doesn't look like it was cheap when new.

Tips welcome and looking for sites that sell parts.

Unless the bearings are rusty or the bike had been thoroughly abused, they probably could just use a good cleaning and repacked with grease. Don't forget about cleaning out the bottom bracket as well.

You'll also prolly need to rip off the derailers and clean/tune those... again pretty straightforward. Look real closely at anything that spins to make sure it's true... wheels, each sprocket... nothing like throwing a chain at 30mph while you're standing and pedalling your ass off - ask me how I know...

Everything with a bike that old should be straight-forward. Parts like what you've listed should be a dime a dozen as all that shit's pretty standard even now.

I haven't bought bike shit in a LONG time, but back in the day www.nashbar.com was the cat's meow.
