Put stuff in cardboard box & check it in. Get to destination, throw box in trash, gear up, ride home.

I've carried my moto gear as carry-on several times and I've never gotten the third degree.

I carry everything I normally carry in my tankbag for a short trip when I've done as you mention..well, other than my Leatherman. LOL

I travel a few times a month with gear, the helmet will be a carry on. Plan for extra time, they sent my sidi race boots thru the scanner three times. If you aren't part of the normal herd, you're suspect.

This is a good question because I'm doing the same thing next week. I don't have a tank bag but I will have leather saddlebags to but my clothes in for the ride home. Still trying to decide if I should carry on my boots(cruiser type boots) or just wear them on the plane. I figured leather jacket and helmet would be carry on and the rest of my stuff will be checked.
