Of course legalization and regulation is the most sensible and profitable solution but there's some big hurdles.
A lot of people and politicians have outdated perceptions of pot use and think of casual marijuana use as somehow completely different and sinister compared to alcohol. When it comes to pot vs alcohol, pot is the better drug on every level. No hangover, no violent inconsolable rage, no driving 85 mph in school zones and the effect is more pleasant and non-addictive. It also doesn't fuck up your liver...or your lungs. That's right kids, lung cancer from pot smoking alone is an unrecorded event in medical history. Unfortunately the alcohol companies know this and will fight with everything to keep their greatest competition from becoming legal. As will the pharmaceutical companies. A cheap, readily available anti-depressant for the masses? No thanks, we'd like you to talk to your doctor about our assortment of 5 dollar a pill brain fuzzers please. Also- this would be admitting defeat and stupidity on the part of the federal government, something they don't do very often. The headache of freeing the thousands of people nationwide locked up for dope would be a clusterfuck for local governments. And what if someone had weed and a gun? You're going to have to go back to the judge or reconvene another jury to alter their sentence to deduct the drug charge, another time-consuming, giant headache. The logistics of implementing legalization all at once are impossible. Most likely it would be decriminalization and then gradually moving towards legalization.

No. I don't ride drunk. I wouldn't ride/drive stoned.
