LOL @ Macy's -- Low-quality private label junk like "Alfani" that doesn't hold up Here is the peacoat I'm talking about. http://www.schottnyc.com/products/fa...elton-wool.htm The advantage of coats like this is their versatility --- you can wear it with crappy clothes or nice clothes. You can wear it on a date or to church, unlike a down parka that makes you look like an inner-city bum. |

There was a young guy on my offroad forum that went to the south pole for work. Pretty damn cool. The window glass on their building was 5" thick or some shit. Talk about hoping you don't run out of fuel and the delivery plane can make it every time.

I'd suck it up for that because that's just damn cool (NPI). It just sucks here because once I step 5ft off campus I'm in a Jason Aldean video. I also have a thing for deserts and I want to go to the biggest frozen desert out there, Antartica.

Are you talking about riding to school? Or just walking?
If it's just walking, forget about it man. I went to school in Michigan, and I only wore waist-length jackets. If I had been smart enough to wear a pea coat instead, it would have been better.....but I didn't. That's proof you don't need anything more. It's your chest and head that need protection the most, not your limbs. I suppose you could buy a couple pairs of flannel-lined jeans, but I can guarantee they'd be hotter than long underwear. By the way if you get a pea coat, don't get some cheap crap at the mall like Eddie Bauer. The wool they use isn't dense enough to protect against the wind. It's just for hipsters who want the "look" of a navy pea but don't know shit about what it's supposed to be like.
Go to schottnyc.com and get one of theirs. They were an official supplier to the Navy, and their wool peas are so dense they could stand up by itself if you propped it up against a wall. |

My husband survived school in NY and he grew up in Miami. How'd he do it? Navy issue pea coat.

A quality pea coat is a must. I have one I used in NY, and all of my trips to cold destinations in the Winter (Chicago, NY, UK, Canada, etc.) Great bang for your buck.

When in doubt, check out stored that carry construction clothing. They will have those lined jeans, that others have mentioned, and they're damned warm. One simple trick is to wear windbreaker style nylon pants over regular jeans, when you're out in the cold. They pack down to nothing and add several degrees to your cold tolerance.
Forget pea coats and such. Get yourself a coat that's designed after the classic survival parka. The same stores that carry the lined pants will have the coat. It's relatively inexpensive and far warmer than the alternatives. You'll also be grateful for the hood, when the wind is up.

Another thing you are going to need to do is lose that Atlanta shuffle everyone seems to do down there.
None of that casual "stroll" bullshit up here. Don't like the cold? Move your ass. 4mph or faster dammit. Preferable 5-6 |
