Cops did the same thing to some people my dad knows. Cop showed up to tell the lady her son was did. All they had was his license and no proper body identification. Her sone was alive, he just had left his ID in his friends car.

Happened to my next door neighbor up in jersey too, His car was stolen in the middle of the night, wrecked and killed the thief. Cops show up at the house to tell the wife that he died. Guy was lucky though that he answered the door and the cops tried to tell him that he was dead.
