Question Your experience so far with 4G

This doesn't have much to do with phones, but I have heard "rumors" that the new 4G laptop cards & hotspot devices often disconnect whenever poor signal forces them to transition from 4G to 3G. Is that true? If so, which company is that worse with?

I just won an auction for a 4g phone, so I will let you know in a week or so how it is.

I had a verizon with 4g...occasional lost calls and the internet didn't seem to work in any buildings. I heard that they were making a software update so it would switch between 3g and 4g.

When the internet worked it was faster.

I think it's been dependent on the hardware and the type of 4g cards you're looking in to. Some of the 1st gen LTE stuff have had some issues with the handoff, but I'm not sure if the newest stuff has solved the issues, or if there have been releases of software patches. I know one or two people at work who are using the Sprint WiMax stuff and don't seem to have problems. I have no personal experience with either though. The best bet may be to figure out if you're going with LTE or WiMax, then see what the latest and greatest laptop cards are out and hit up reviews and forums to see how they're holding up in real world use and if there are problems that may be specific to location, as well as hardware/software.

Just got a 4G modem with Verizon, and so far the speed rocks. I average about 7 mbps download, but occasionally I get as high as 14-15 if I'm in the middle of the city. PCWorld did a test proving that Verizon has the fastest modems/cards by far. As far as phones go, they didn't get to test the new Thunderbolt because it wasn't out yet, but I see no reason why that wouldn't be the fastest phone. They said Sprint's network was really spotty and that their EVO's and Sprint cards could only get 4G about half the time, no matter which city they tried them in.

this. I have a 4G modem for my laptop and it spends most of it's time on a lower network setting because it can't find a 4G connection.

Shitty.

Does it even transition from 4G to 3G, or does it disconnect before doing so?
